Brno - Today, the Brno city council appointed Michal Sedláček as the director of the Office of the Architect of the City of Brno, effective May 1. Last week, he was recommended to the council by an international selection committee as the best of nine candidates. According to the mayor's deputy, Martin Ander (SZ), Sedláček has many years of experience in leading architectural offices and teams, as well as practical experience in preparing extensive investment projects.
Sedláček will officially take up the position on July 1, as he must finish his current employment in Los Angeles. He told reporters today that he was looking for a similar job because he wanted to return to his hometown of Brno. This year's budget for the office is around ten million crowns. It is likely to be higher in the coming years. The office, which aims at urban development, land-use planning, and communication with the public, will have between 12 and 15 employees. The selection of these employees will be up to Sedláček.
He does not want to only announce a public competition but will also look for suitable employees himself. "But first I have to resolve my work abroad. I have a three-month notice period, but I will try to shorten it to two months. The new position is a challenge for me and can be said to be a dream job. Brno has great potential, and I will be able to contribute to its appearance," Sedláček said. However, he does not have a vision. "I think that a person in such a position shouldn't come with a vision, but rather be open. An architect doesn't know everything about anything, but knows something about everything. Therefore, they must have perspective and bring together a whole team of experts, who will then choose the best," Sedláček added.
The councilors followed the committee's recommendation, which appreciated the fact that Sedláček has a wealth of professional experience from abroad. Since 2007, he has served as the head of the Los Angeles branch of Aedas, the fifth-largest architectural firm in the world. He also founded this American branch, having previously worked in architectural offices in Moscow and New York. "The committee recommended him to us considering that the main task of the director will be to build the organization from the ground up with all that it entails, both in personnel and organizational aspects," Ander stated.
Out of nine applicants, the committee selected four who advanced to the next round. "The jury also recommended that the city consider the possibility of collaborating with the other candidates. In particular, candidate Jiří Klokočka demonstrated extensive experience with the work of a city urban planner," Ander added.
The Office of the Chief Architect previously existed in Brno, but it was dissolved in 2003 when the city was governed by a coalition led by ODS.
