Brno - The Office of the Architect of the City of Brno (KAM) wants to focus more in the future on revitalizing squares in individual city districts. A manual is being prepared for mayors, which so far only Prague has among Czech cities. Reconstruction could help, for example, Tuřanské Square, said city architect Michal Sedláček at a professional conference at the Building Fair in Brno.

The city architect began work in July of last year. Today at the conference on the historical centers of Czech and Moravian cities, he demonstrated that Brno is on the right track. In recent years, according to him, the city hall has managed to revitalize several streets and squares in the center. He mentioned, for example, Joštova Street. "From a traffic junction that was almost like a train station space and it was dangerous to walk there, it has become one of the most pleasant places in Brno," Sedláček stated.

According to him, life has also returned to Jakubské Square, the space in front of the Janáček Theatre has changed, as well as Zelný Market or Moravské Square with the statue of Margrave Jošt. "It is a completely different environment. It makes sense to go out into the city and spend time there; there are attractions that attract both tourists and locals," Sedláček stated. According to him, the statue of Jošt improves the mood of passersby daily.

In the center, architects will also deal with the park in Roosevelt, a major reconstruction of Veveří Street is planned, as well as the space in front of the main railway station, including the connecting streets. According to Sedláček, the historical center of Brno is already alive today, but attention also needs to be paid to the city districts. He mentioned problematic areas, such as Halasovo Square in Lesná, which does not fulfill the function of a square at all, as well as Náměstí Míru in Kraví hora or Tuřanské Square.

In these places, according to Sedláček, public spaces do not function. "We would like to select places where the square and streets should be changed," the chief architect stated. A manual is intended to help municipalities, providing inspiration even for those who are not architects or urban planners.
