Prague - Prague politicians today once again debated new building regulations that have been stirring strong emotions in the metropolis for several days due to advertising regulation. The Deputy Mayor and head of Prague's TOP 09, Jiří Vávra, urged Mayor Tomáš Hudeček (TOP 09) during the council meeting to respond to the call from councilors to postpone the effectiveness of the regulations until 2016. The council will address the call again next week, as reported by ČTK from a source at the meeting. The TOP 09 presidium, in response to the activities of the advertising lobby, stated in the morning that "the city leadership cannot be bought or intimidated." The regulations were recently approved by the monochrome TOP 09 council in accordance with the law. In addition to regulating advertising over six square meters, it aims to set rules for building heights, limit urban expansion at the expense of open countryside, and prioritize the development of infill and unused areas. They are set to take effect in October. After a strong protest campaign, in which the company BigBoard initially flooded Prague with billboards targeting the regulations and eventually even covered TOP 09 election billboards, councilors opened the topic last week. They ultimately voted for a resolution urging the council to delay the effectiveness of the regulations. On Monday, BigBoard announced that the regulations were devastating for outdoor advertising operators. They are therefore considering arbitration, in which they will seek one billion crowns. "I believe that the call from the councilors, which received support across the political spectrum, cannot be ignored," Vávra told ČTK. The mayor is expected to address the topic at the next council meeting. Hudeček already stated on Monday that he stands behind the ordinance. He is not afraid of arbitration. "We are fulfilling the amendment to the building code, according to which we must update the ordinance that serves the development of the city," he said. "Moreover, advertising simply does not belong in the center," he added. According to him, the regulations will save Prague dozens of billions over ten years, among other things in infrastructure construction. Today, the national leadership of the TOP 09 party stood behind Prague's TOP 09. "The efforts of Prague politicians to significantly reduce the overgrown advertising in the metropolis have clashed with private business interests," it stated in a press release. "The blindness to TOP 09's billboard spaces is the best evidence that the current city leadership cannot be bought or intimidated," the members added.
