Atelier Štěpán is an authorial studio engaged in architecture, public space, and art. It was founded in 1997 by the married couple Vanda and Marek Štěpán. They create modern architecture that grows from conservative roots. In architectural and urban topics, they work with light, search for and find inner truth, and develop an archetypal concept of architecture. The studio is firmly rooted in the Moravian-Austrian region. It is known for its designs of sacred buildings, new constructions, and reconstructions, and increasingly, it also designs other civic and residential buildings. Among the most famous sacred buildings of the studio are the elliptical Church of the Holy Spirit in Ostrava-Zábřeh (2007), the circular St. Wenceslas Churches in Sazovice (2017), Bl. Marie Restituty in Brno on Lesná (2020), or the area for the Mass of Pope Benedict XVI in Brno-Tuřany (2009). Newer realizations include the conceptual object Mrak and the café café Robot in the Moravian Gallery's Museum of Applied Arts in Brno (2021) and the reconstruction of the Mill Gate of the castle in Kroměříž (2022). A specific concept is the so-called Freedom Units, modular movable residential units, minimalist in their design and volume with complete furnishing (since 2010). Marek Štěpán was an advisor to the Chancellor of the President of the Republic, the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Architecture at VUT, and since 2016 he has led the Laboratory of Sacred Space at the Faculty of Civil Engineering at VUT in Brno. Atelier Štěpán has received numerous significant awards.
