Brno – A structure that currently resembles a fairground roller coaster is rising in the courtyard of the Museum of Applied Arts in Brno. Over time, it will transform into a levitating conceptual object in the shape of a cloud with an area of 300 m². The author of the work is architect Marek Jan Štěpán and his colleagues.
The Museum of Applied Arts is currently undergoing partial reconstruction and a change of its permanent exhibition, and is closed to the public. The cloud is part of a new concept and will become a dominant feature clearly visible from the Hotel International or Besední dům.
"The completion date is next spring, as the reopening of the Museum of Applied Arts will take place in June 2021," said Daniela Křižanová, spokesperson for the Moravian Gallery, to ČTK. The financial costs have not yet been disclosed by the gallery.
The cloud is designed as a pneumatic cushion with internal overpressure made of two layers of matte film. Inside the cushion, there will be a network of several thousand LEDs that allows for projection from the inside. The object will also be equipped with sound. According to information on Štěpán's studio website, the cloud can interactively reflect events in the building, respond to social events with sound or light, or it may serve as a space for artistic performances. At the same time, it provides protection against rain.
