Ostrava – Ostrava wants to start transforming the space in front of the Church of the Holy Spirit in Ostrava-Zábřeh in 2026. The project is currently being prepared, and the city expects to complete the reconstruction in 2027. This was announced to journalists today by the city hall spokesperson Gabriela Pokorná. The currently unattractive area in poor technical condition is to be replaced by a space for gatherings and community activities.
The project is based on a study prepared by the Brno studio m2au, which won an architectural competition in 2022. "The area in front of the Church of the Holy Spirit deserves a transformation. The current state is almost a disgrace for this part of the city. At the same time, I understand the concerns of local residents and visitors to the church and the shopping center regarding the lack of parking spaces if the existing parking lot in front of the church were to be removed," said the deputy mayor Hana Tichánková (ANO).
She added that the project has therefore been adjusted from the original proposal to retain parking spaces. "We tried to find a solution that would meet the needs of all parties. New parking spaces will be created, which, however, will not be the dominant feature of the entire area in front of the church but will appropriately complement it. The center remains, as in the original proposal, a generous and tasteful public space with a water feature, trees, and an area that local residents can use for gatherings and relaxation," Tichánková added.
While the transformation of the site will mean the removal of the current paid parking lot in front of the church, the study anticipates the creation of a new parking lot with 35 parking spaces next to the Volgogradská Kindergarten. According to the spokesperson, additional parking options will be available next to the church and along Kotlářova Street.
"Furthermore, the study proposes, beyond the brief from the architectural competition, future connection of Kotlářova Street to Výškovická Street in both directions and its exit to Patrice Lumumba Street. It will also be possible to turn left onto Výškovická Street from Kosmonautů Street, making the entire area accessible from almost all directions," said the spokesperson.
The dominant feature of the renovated area is the Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Spirit, designed by Brno architect Marek Štěpán, which opened in 2007. The surroundings of the church and the nearby Kotva shopping center are significant places in the most populous district of Ostrava, South. The public space in front of the Kotva shopping center was renovated two years ago. New sidewalks, bike paths, and furnishings have been added. In the past, the nearby Luna cinema and its surroundings, including the adjacent park, were also renovated.
