Brno – The South Moravian Region will provide at least 200 million crowns for the construction of a multifunctional hall at the Brno exhibition center. Governor Jan Grolich (KDU-ČSL) said today in a statement to ČTK that the region has also prepared 100 million for the construction of an athletics hall, but if the project fails, it can allocate that amount to the multifunctional hall instead. The facility at the exhibition center, costing 2.5 billion, is expected to be completed in 2023 and offer seating for 13,000 spectators. The state is also expected to contribute, with the city covering the rest. Brno has a budget approved for this year exceeding 15 billion.
The regional council today recommended that the deputies approve the signing of a memorandum of cooperation between the region and Brno. "A similar multifunctional hall is missing in South Moravia. Support for its construction from the region is necessary and completely logical. It is not just about sports, but also about the possibility of hosting significant cultural events. Brno simply deserves such a hall," said Grolich. The planned hall will serve, for example, the hockey team Kometa Brno, as well as for cultural and social events. The facility is expected to be completed in 2023, with the aim of subsequently hosting the World Ice Hockey Championship.
The hall for Kometa was originally supposed to be located behind Lužánky, where the city has been dealing with property disputes for a long time. Kometa won the title in the top ice hockey league in 2017 after 51 years and managed to defend it a year later. This is why discussions about the creation of a hall at the exhibition center began.
Last December, the deputies of Brno approved the budget for this year with revenues of 13.8 billion and expenses of 15.3 billion crowns. The difference is to be covered by surpluses and loans. At the end of last year, the city had a debt of three billion.
