Brno - The Brno city council today approved two cooperation agreements for the preparation of the construction of a cycling oval and for the construction of a multifunctional hall for the hockey team Komet. The velodrome is expected to be built for around 350 million korunas in the Komárov area in the southern part of Brno. The hall will be built by Komet at the site of the old velodrome at the exhibition grounds, which should cost around 1.4 billion korunas.
One memorandum concerns the cooperation between the city and TJ Favorit Brno on the preparation of a new cycling oval on Hněvkovského Street. Nearby, there is today a baseball field, outdoor fitness equipment, a pump track, tennis courts, a climbing wall, and there is also a natural biotope nearby.
The city has commissioned a study for the velodrome and plans to announce a tender for the contractor by the end of the year. The construction is expected to take place between 2019 and 2021. "The memorandum regarding the velodrome should help the sports unit Favorit Brno to not lose its property in Pisárky. The memorandum about the hall states that Komet is declaring its interest as an investor and the city expresses moral support for building this hall here," said Brno councilor Jaroslav Suchý (KDU-ČSL) to ČTK.
According to him, the projects are interconnected. "Cyclists must not find themselves in a situation where they do not have anything to ride on. First, the new velodrome must be built or a temporary solution must be found, which we would rather avoid, and only then can the demolition of the old velodrome for the construction of the hall begin," Suchý pointed out.
The new velodrome will be fully covered with a wooden track of 250 meters in length, which meets the parameters of the International Cycling Union (UCI) for hosting international competitions. It will have a capacity of 2,500 spectators, of which 2,000 seats will be fixed and 500 mobile. Cyclists have long fought for a new track.
At the site of the old velodrome, after its relocation, a multifunctional hall will be built for about 1.4 billion korunas. It should offer 12,000 seats. The city council today approved a memorandum of cooperation with the region, the exhibition grounds, and Komet Group.
Komet won the championship title in the hockey league last year and this year. They currently play at the DRFG arena, which has 7,700 seats. The capacity is sometimes not enough.
