Velké Březno (Ústecko) – The municipality of Velké Březno in the Ústí region wants to transform the long-constructed area in the center into a multifunctional building, which will include an office, library, and café. The town hall building, purchased for 28 million korunas, has had an architectural study prepared and a contractor for the project documentation selected. The renovation costs are estimated at one hundred million korunas, and the municipality, which has about 2400 residents, will likely take out a loan for the investment. This was stated to ČTK by Mayor Zuzana Mendlová.

The building was created in the 1980s as a service center. However, it was only partially constructed, and after the revolution, it passed into private hands. It was used as a wholesale center, for a while, spare parts for the automotive industry were pressed there, and for the last approximately seven years, it has been empty. "After 30 years, the owner decided to sell it. Since the building occupies two-thirds of the center of the municipality, we saw the purchase as an opportunity to finally influence the appearance of the place. Moreover, the building is classified as administrative-industrial, so there was concern that some significant industrial production could take place in the center,” said Mendlová.

Velké Březno, with a budget of 60 million korunas, purchased the area, including adjacent plots, in 2023. "We agreed on installments, which was advantageous for the municipality. The purpose of the area emerged from the architectural study costing 400,000 korunas. Half of this amount was paid by a subsidy from the Ústí Region,” said the mayor.

In one part of the area, the municipal office, currently located in a historical villa with insufficient capacity for the town hall's needs, will be located. The post office will also move here. In the other part, the municipality will have technical facilities, a storage area, and possibly an archive, with plans for a café facing the square. The municipality wants to establish barrier-free spaces for a clinic that would be offered to doctors. On the first floor, there will be a library, a community center, a large hall for weddings or municipal council meetings, and two apartments will be created on the third floor. The municipality has published a visualization on its website.

The preparation of project documentation will take about a year, after which the municipality will announce a tender for the contractor. They will pay three million korunas for the documentation, which has been promised a subsidy from the Just Transition Operational Program. They will also seek a subsidy for the actual construction work. "We have also discussed the possibility of a favorable loan from the National Development Bank,” said the mayor. The current municipal office building will be offered for sale, or it may be used for a basic art school.
