Brno – Brno has received a loan commitment of one billion crowns for the construction of a multifunctional hall at the Brno exhibition center. The hall, along with other costs such as parking, will amount to 3.3 billion crowns. The city is looking for additional sources of funding, with at least 200 million expected to be contributed by the South Moravian Region. This was stated today by the mayor of Brno, Markéta Vaňková (ODS), in a press release. According to her, the city will request 300 million from the National Sports Agency, and additional funds are sought from the National Development Fund. The project has zoning approval and a building permit.
The Českomoravská Guarantee and Development Bank approved a binding loan commitment of one billion crowns on Tuesday. "The maturity of the approved loan is 25 years from the first drawdown, and repayments can be postponed for up to four years from the signing of the loan agreement. A working version of the loan agreement has been approved, and we expect that its finalization will take several weeks," said Brno councilor and chairman of the board of Arena Brno Petr Kratochvíl (ODS).
According to Vaňková, the city has taken a significant step towards the actual construction with a successful loan application. "The multifunctional arena will not be a project existing only in visualizations, models, and in documentation at the building authority," she noted.
She further stated that the development of the city must not stop even in the difficult times after the COVID pandemic. "A large city ring road and a tram line to the campus are under construction; we have the reconstruction of Mendlovo Square ahead of us, as well as the building of flood protection measures. We want to start building Janáček Cultural Center. Ongoing care for kindergartens, schools, and senior homes, along with their gradual expansion, is also essential," Vaňková said.
Therefore, the city is seeking sources of funding, according to her. "In the case of the multifunctional hall, it means that at least 200 million will be contributed based on a closed memorandum by the South Moravian Region, and on August 26, I will convene an extraordinary council meeting where the request for a subsidy from the National Sports Agency in the amount of 300 million crowns will be approved. Additional funds may be obtained from the National Development Fund," she said.
The multifunctional hall received joint approval in June this year. The facility will have two underground and six above-ground floors, offering 150 hidden parking spaces. The built-up area will be nearly 16,700 m². For concerts, the hall should accommodate up to 13,300 people, including standing places; for hockey, a total of 13,250 seats are planned, and for tennis, volleyball, basketball, futsal, or floorball, the ceiling is 12,000 spectator seats.
