Brno – Brno has obtained a final land use decision and building permit for the construction of a multifunctional hall at the exhibition center. City representatives announced this to reporters today. The acquisition took 850 days, which politicians consider a short time given the size of the building. The hall, costing 2.7 billion crowns, will offer 13,300 seats. Construction could begin next spring and last approximately two years, said Brno's mayor Markéta Vaňková (ODS). The hall, named Arena Brno, will serve sports as well as cultural and social events. Financing will be partially supported by the region and the state. Brno will take out a loan for part of the costs.
The building near pavilion Z at the exhibition center will cost 2.7 billion, while the entire project with additional expenses, such as constructing parking spaces and similar items, will amount to 3.3 billion crowns. The South Moravian Region has pledged at least 200 million. The city aims to obtain hundreds of millions from the National Sports Agency and is applying for further funds from ministries. The city will take out a loan for part of the costs, and the municipal company Arena Brno, which was established for the construction of the hall, will also contribute. According to Vaňková, there was also discussion about possibly involving a private entity, but that did not succeed.
Councillor Petr Kratochvíl (ODS) stated that the project includes the entire complex of permitted buildings. "We have a final document for the hall itself. Recently, we obtained a joint permit for water works for the first phase of areas and roads in close proximity to the hall. We are currently preparing documentation for the second phase, which involves building a new main road and other local roads, sidewalks, and public transport shelters. A total of 1,300 parking spaces will be created," said Kratochvíl.
The building will have two underground and six above-ground floors, providing 150 concealed parking spaces. The built-up area will be almost 16,700 m². According to Governor Jan Grolich, this is a significant leap, as discussions about the hall have been ongoing for several years. It was originally considered that the hall, where the hockey team Kometa Brno will play, could be located behind Lužánky, and later at the exhibition center in the place of the current velodrome. Vaňková stated that it would not have been possible to proceed so quickly at either of those previous locations.
For concerts, the hall should accommodate up to 13,300 people, including standing spots; for hockey, including the supporters' section, 13,250 seats are anticipated, while the limit for tennis, volleyball, basketball, futsal, or floorball is set at 12,000 spectator seats.
