Brno - The representatives of the South Moravian Region today approved a memorandum on cooperation between the city, the region, the Brno Trade Fairs, and the hockey club Kometa regarding the construction of a multifunctional hall in Brno. The hall, where hockey players would play, is to be built at the exhibition grounds for approximately 1.4 billion crowns and should offer 12,000 seats. The investor is to be the club. Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) recently stated during his visit to Brno that the state could contribute half a billion. The city and region could also contribute.
The memorandum was part of a package of several points, which all 58 present representatives voted for. No one was against and no one abstained. The city council had already approved the memorandum in the past.
The hall is to be located at the current cycling oval near Křížkovský Street. The velodrome will be moved to Hněvskovský Street, where there is already a baseball field, tennis courts, a pump track, and other sports facilities.
The new velodrome is to be built between 2019 and 2021. In its place, the multifunctional hall will serve various purposes. Brno will strive for it to host the hockey championship in 2024.
The hall would primarily provide facilities for the hockey club Kometa Brno, which won the title in the top hockey league last year after 51 years and succeeded in defending it this year. Kometa currently plays in the DRFG arena, which has a capacity of 7,700. However, this capacity is sometimes insufficient.
