Brno - The Brno councilors have selected the company Arch.Design, which will prepare a study for the construction of a new cycling track for nearly two million. The construction of the velodrome in the Komárov area around Hněvkovského street is estimated to cost 350 million. A new ice hockey hall for Kometa Brno is planned to be built at the site of the old velodrome at the exhibition grounds.

The company Arch.Design submitted the lowest bid. "The construction of the new velodrome is among the strategic projects of the city and the councilors have taken another step towards its realization. Arch.Design already prepared a site study for the Hněvkovského location in 2008. All the sports facilities included in that study have already been built. Except for the velodrome," said Hladík.

The study is expected to be completed this year. At the end of the year, the city plans to announce a tender for the construction contractor, which it aims to select in the first quarter of next year. The construction is expected to take place from 2019 to 2021.

The new velodrome will be fully covered with a wooden track measuring 250 meters in length, which meets the parameters of the international federation UCI for hosting international competitions.

The current velodrome is located on the grounds of the Brno Trade Fairs, and the track belongs to the cyclists of TJ Favorit Brno, who celebrated the club's 60th anniversary last year. Near Hněvkovského street, there is a baseball field, tennis courts, a pump track, a climbing wall, and outdoor fitness equipment, and there is also a natural swimming biotope nearby. Cyclists have long been advocating for a new track.

In the vacant space at the exhibition grounds, a hall for the hockey team Kometa Brno is to be built for 1.4 billion korunas, which this year defended its championship title in the extraliga. Originally, the stadium was to be located behind Lužánky along with a football stadium, but the city abandoned that plan due to property disputes.
