Brno - Brno wants to start the construction of an athletics hall in the university campus next year for 640 million crowns. It aims to secure nearly a quarter of a billion crowns from the state, while the rest should be covered by the city together with the South Moravian Region. Richard Mrázek (ANO), the mayor's deputy, told ČTK today. The hall will have a capacity of 2,000 spectators. It will serve as a facility for athletes who currently do not have an indoor arena in South Moravia. The building is expected to be completed in 2020.
Mrázek, together with the mayor of Brno, Petr Vokřál (ANO), presented the project for the construction of the hall to the government today, which is concluding a two-day visit to the South Moravian Region. According to Mrázek, the contractor is currently being selected, and the winner should be known in a few weeks. This is the first time that Brno has sought a contractor for the athletics hall under the conditions of the so-called Yellow Book. This means that the winner of the tender will prepare all stages of the project documentation and will also construct the hall.
The city has previously committed to the construction of the hall in a memorandum signed also by Masaryk University and the Czech Athletics Federation. Last year, despite opposition criticism, the council approved a land exchange with a private owner, from whom Brno received the land for the construction of the hall.
In addition to athletes, the neighboring Masaryk University will also use it. It will also serve for scientific research activities aimed at streamlining the athletes' training process. City officials claim that a covered athletics hall is missing in South Moravia, which forces athletes to utilize various gyms mainly in the autumn and winter, or they have to go to Prague.
