Brno - The Brno city council today approved a contract for the development of a technical study for the construction of an athletics hall. The sports facility is expected to cost half a billion crowns and should be located at the university campus. Construction could start at the turn of 2017 and 2018, said the mayor's deputy Richard Mrázek (ANO) to journalists today. According to him, the capacity of the hall should be up to 2000 seated spectators.
The city committed to the construction of the hall in a memorandum signed by its representatives last November with the Czech Athletic Federation and Masaryk University. "We want to resolve the long-term unsatisfactory situation of athletics in Brno," stated Mrázek.
To process the technical study, the city approached six suppliers for bids. Four applicants submitted bids, from which the city selected the company AiD team from Brno with a study price of 1.9 million excluding VAT. "The study is one of the fundamental steps to proceed with the selection process for the contractor. It should provide us with answers regarding the location of the hall, connections to engineering networks, and internal layout," added Mrázek.
The building is to be situated opposite the Faculty of Sports Studies of Masaryk University. The city also wants to involve other organizations in the financing, such as the athletics federation or the region, to cover about half of the costs.
The hall is to have three floors, one of which would be underground. Inside, it should have 1500 fixed seats and 500 mobile seats that could be used for other purposes. It will feature a running track and all the necessary stations for indoor championships, including areas for long jump, high jump, and pole vault.
The hall will primarily serve athletes, but it will also be used by the neighboring Masaryk University. According to the city, a covered hall for athletics is lacking in southern Moravia, which means that athletes must use various gyms for training, especially in autumn and winter.
