Brno - Brno wants to start constructing an athletics hall in the university campus next year for 670 million crowns. The building has received a land-use decision, and it should have a building permit by mid-next year. Jaroslav Suchý (KDU-ČSL), the city councilor for sports, told ČTK. The hall will have a capacity of 2,200 spectators. There will also be 170 parking spaces.
Initially, under the previous coalition, it was planned that the hall would partially use the planned parking lot near the nearby university hospital. However, according to Suchý, it is not being prepared yet. "In order to obtain a building permit, we had to place the parking lot directly on the plots next to the hall, which belong to the city," he stated. He added that any parking fees will impact the revenues of the sports facility.
The construction itself is expected to last 19 months, with completion anticipated in 2022. This was the first time that Brno sought a contractor for the athletics hall according to the so-called Yellow Book. This means that the winner of the tender will procure all stages of the project documentation and then also build the hall. The competition was won by a consortium of companies Imos Brno, Hochtief cz, and Sport Construction.
The building is set to have one floor below ground and two above ground. In addition to athletes, for whom a covered hall is lacking in South Moravia, Masaryk University will also utilize the facility. Brno has already signed a memorandum regarding the construction with them and the Czech Athletics Federation in the past. According to Suchý, Brno also has an agreement with the South Moravian Region, which is expected to contribute 100 million crowns to the construction of the hall. The city is also negotiating support with the state. "We believe that infrastructure sports facilities should be financed 50 percent by the state," Suchý added.
