Brno - The construction of an athletic hall in the university campus in Brno, with estimated costs of 477 million crowns, could start as early as the second half of next year. This was stated today by deputy mayor Richard Mrázek (ANO). According to him, the construction itself will last two years, and the city wants to find a contractor by the end of this year. The hall is to have a capacity of 2000 spectators. It will serve as a facility for athletes, who currently lack such a venue.
In two months, the city plans to initiate a tender process. "We will compete directly for a contractor, who must also secure a designer. Therefore, the study will take longer. We want to select this year so that it can be designed over the winter. If everything goes smoothly, construction could start in the second half of next year. Otherwise, it will be until 2019," said Mrázek.
The estimated costs of around 477 million crowns were determined as an average after discussions with specialized companies. "Eight of them sent the city proposals ranging from 380 to 560 million crowns for the construction. An average was made from this. However, the price may vary in the competition," added Mrázek.
The costs will not solely fall on the city. "The region will also contribute to the financing, and we are waiting for the announcement of a grant program from the Ministry of Education. We expect that the city would cover about half of the costs, and the other half would be shared by the region and the ministry," the deputy included.
At the beginning of the year, the city council approved, despite opposition criticism, the exchange of land between the city and a private owner, from whom Brno acquired land for the construction of the hall. Although the opposition supports the construction of the hall, they believe that the exchange was not advantageous for the city.
The hall will be used not only by athletes but also by the neighboring Masaryk University. It will also serve for scientific research activities aimed at enhancing the training process of athletes. The city leadership claims that a covered athletics hall is missing in southern Moravia, which is why athletes must primarily use various gyms for training during autumn and winter.
