Brno - The leadership of Brno today signed a contract with a consortium of construction companies IMOS Brno, HOCHTIEF CZ, and SPORT Construction, which are to complete the athletic hall between Netroufalky Street and Bítešská Street in the Bohunice university campus by mid-2021. The hall will be used by performance athletes and students of Masaryk University, said mayor Petr Vokřál (ANO) at a press conference today. The construction cost is nearly 650 million crowns.

Most of the funds will be paid by the city, 100 million crowns were promised by the South Moravian Region, and at the same time the city is waiting for the Ministry of Education to announce grant programs. Their announcement has been delayed since the outbreak of a corruption scandal at the ministry last year. "We have pre-negotiated 200 million crowns and it would be possible to draw them for the ongoing construction," Vokřál stated.

The city has only prepared a technical study, which was given to the consortium of companies. Their task is to develop the project documentation, obtain zoning permission and building permit, and then start construction. Everything is to be completed from the signing of the contract within 35 months, with the actual construction lasting 19 months.

In preparing the construction, the city consulted the design of the hall with the leadership of Czech athletics and with the international federation. It will accommodate 2200 spectators and will meet all current parameters for hosting international events.

Masaryk University, which owns land in the vicinity, plans to build a swimming pool in the long term, but is waiting for the grant program from the Ministry of Education. "At the same time, we want to build conference facilities here and thus utilize the synergies in the area of the campus, where several faculties, including the sports faculty, are located. Before the pool is built, we want to construct simple inexpensive sports facilities and enhance the area as a whole," said rector Mikuláš Bek.

The operator of the hall will likely be the city company Starez, which also manages other municipal sports facilities.
