Brno - Brno plans to build an athletic center in the university campus area. The hall could be located opposite the Faculty of Sports Studies of Masaryk University, Mayor Petr Vokřál (ANO) told reporters today. According to him, the construction of such halls costs around a quarter of a billion crowns. The city will try to obtain a grant from the state. Work could begin in 2017.
The city has reached an agreement with the athletics federation and Masaryk University on the construction of the hall. "In Brno, there are around 4,500 athletes from the youngest to the oldest categories. It is important to realize that these people do not have adequate places to train during the winter and are looking for temporary spaces," Vokřál stated.
According to him, the hall would be utilized because Masaryk University would hold classes there in the morning, and in the afternoon it would serve sports clubs for training. "It would primarily serve athletes, but it would also have a multifunctional role. Not everything would be there, but other sports could be added alongside athletics," Vokřál added, stating that the hall should meet the criteria for hosting competitions. "Top-level competitions could be held there, but we do not have ambitions that it could serve, for example, for championships," the mayor added.
However, according to him, everything is in the initial stages. "A study will be created and land issues in the campus will start to be addressed. We would like to have the study completed by March so that we know what the hall should look like and how much it will cost," Vokřál said. It is estimated that similar halls are built for 250 to 300 million crowns. Afterwards, project documentation will be prepared, and if everything goes smoothly, construction could begin in 2017. "We will also apply for co-financing at the central level for the years 2017 and 2018," Vokřál added.
