Brno - The Brno city council today approved the land exchange, which is expected to enable the construction of an athletic hall. The city will transfer several plots of land in various parts of Brno to the company CD XXI in exchange for land between the highway access road and Netroufalky Street. The total value of the exchange is approximately 81 million crowns. It still needs to be approved by the city council, and optimistic estimates suggest that construction could begin as early as the beginning of next year, said Deputy Mayor Richard Mrázek at a press conference after the council meeting.

The site for the hall is one of the last in the university campus area, covering approximately two hectares. The company with which the city will exchange will receive, for example, plots in Královo Pole, near Dornych Street, plots under already operational buildings in Bystrc and Starý Lískovec, and also a property on Leitnerova Street. "Additionally, the company will pay the city about five million crowns," said Mrázek.

The city aims to expedite the construction, which is estimated at half a billion crowns, as much as possible. "If the city council approves the exchange, we will announce a tender for a project documentation developer who will be responsible for obtaining the zoning decision and building permit. And it might be possible to start building in a year," said Mrázek.

The city committed to constructing a hall with seating for 2000 spectators in a memorandum signed last November in cooperation with Masaryk University and the Czech Athletics Federation. The goal is to address the long-term unsatisfactory situation of athletics in Brno. Athletes currently lack a place to train in unfavorable weather conditions and resort to various gymnasiums.

The hall will feature both a running track and sectors for technical disciplines. It will also be used by students of the faculty of sports studies, located directly across the road.
