Šternberk - The local council in Šternberk, located in the Olomouc region, is considering the construction of an indoor swimming pool, as residents currently have to travel to nearby towns and villages to swim. According to experts' estimates, building the indoor pool will cost 170 million Czech crowns. The study for the swimming pool will still be finalized, and costs will be specified, said Irena Černocká, spokeswoman for the Šternberk city council, to ČTK today.

"It is one of the elements of infrastructure that is noticeably missing here in Šternberk. We are hearing especially from parents of children and school leadership, as it is now necessary to travel complicatedly to Olomouc, Uničov, or Bohuňovice for swimming. We believe that a city the size of Šternberk should have its own swimming facilities," Černocká stated.

In Šternberk, which has about 15,000 inhabitants, there is, according to Černocká, also a significant swimming base. "There is a swimming club here that has had successes on an international level, especially among senior competitors. We would like to encourage children and youth to take up this sport as well," Černocká added.

The councilors have already discussed the basic study for the construction of an indoor swimming pool in Šternberk. "The study addresses the design of the indoor pool, which includes a multi-purpose 25-meter pool with six lanes, a recreational and children's area, and wellness facilities with year-round operation. It also includes the necessary infrastructure, space for refreshments, communication, parking lots, sidewalks, and rough terrain and landscaping adjustments," Černocká stated.

The study of the indoor swimming pool will, according to Černocká, be further developed. Experts will also focus on the operational costs of the pool. "The construction costs for the pool are currently estimated at about 170 million Czech crowns," Černocká said. Investments will be specified based on what all the planned indoor pool will include, she added. The plan will then be discussed by the council.

The construction of the indoor pool is proposed on land owned by the city, which has been designated for recreation in the land use plan. The swimming pool would be adjacent to the hospital area and the future athletic stadium complex.
