Šternberk - The new athletic stadium planned by the city hall in Šternberk, Olomouc region, will cost several tens of millions of crowns, with the municipality set to apply for a grant from the Ministry of Education. The city council has already approved the plan, as stated in an announcement published on the city hall's website.
"The athletic stadium in Šternberk will be used by the Athletic Club Šternberk, whose members currently travel to Olomouc for training, where the capacity of the athletic facilities is also insufficient," the city explained the project. The new stadium will also be used by children from local schools and students of the gymnasium. According to the city hall, the local children's and youth house, sports club, and athletes are also interested in using the stadium.
The first phase of the project is set to cost 37.5 million crowns, with the city potentially receiving a grant of up to 20 million. If the ministry approves the financial contribution, construction of the stadium should begin next April and be completed by November of the same year. "It is planned to construct a six-lane oval with a sprint straight designed as a hundred-meter six-lane track with space reserved for adding two longer lanes to create an eight-lane track," the city's announcement states. The project also includes the creation of multifunctional sectors for technical disciplines. A new irrigation system with automatic control will be built on the grassy area of the inner field. The grassy area will serve as a landing area for throwing disciplines, and its dimensions will allow for setting up a football or rugby field at the stadium. In the following two phases, the city plans to build roads and infrastructure as well as a grandstand with facilities for stadium users.
The parameters of the sports facilities will meet the requirements set by national and international federations. This will allow for hosting regional and national competitions, from athletic events to football and mini-football tournaments, as well as competitions for orienteering runners and athletes with disabilities.
