Prague - Prague will have the costly project for the reconstruction of the long-neglected Šlechtova restaurant in Stromovka redone. The city will pay architects 2.4 million crowns for this. ČTK learned this from the council's resolution. The renovation of the heritage-listed building could start next year. Costs are expected to range between 100 to 120 million crowns. The historic restaurant has been deteriorating for decades. Its renovation has been postponed repeatedly in the past. Heritage officials have long regarded the condition of the building as dire. Last year's tender was canceled by the city, which manages the property. According to Deputy Václav Novotný (TOP 09), the project was too expensive, with repairs initially estimated at a quarter of a billion crowns. Architects have been tasked with simplifying the overpriced project. Expensive staircases, elevators, and unnecessary sanitary facilities will be reduced. This will cut the repair cost to about half. The Šlechtova restaurant building, formerly known as the Royal Hall, is a cultural monument. It is named after its last owner, Václav Šlecht. The oldest part of the building dates back to the late 17th century, but it was completed in the mid-19th century. In 1978 and two years later, the building caught fire, and it has been deteriorating since then. It was also damaged by the floods in 2002.
