Kladno - Kladno will start preparatory work for the renovation of Freedom Square in February. This will include tree felling, which must be done during the period of vegetative rest. The current trees are in poor health. They will be replaced with new, already grown deciduous trees. The comprehensive transformation of the square is most likely to begin in May, as reported today by the spokesman of the Kladno city hall, Vít Heral, in a press release.
The felling will concern several dozen trees and shrubbery, where some people have discarded waste and in some cases even used them as a toilet. The new planting will create more shade compared to the current state. New flower and grass beds will retain rainwater. "I would like to emphasize that tree felling is part of the overall conceptual change of greenery in Freedom Square. We are felling in advance during the period of vegetative rest; this is a planned and absolutely correct decision," stated Kladno Mayor Milan Volf (Choice for Kladno).
The new look of the square will be clearer, with additional seating areas, water features, new public toilets, covered bus stops, and paving made of granite and concrete elements connecting to the previously refurbished pedestrian zone. "In the first phase of construction, the so-called boat and public toilets will still remain; the city plans to remove them only just before the opening of the facilities that will replace them," added Heral.
The city announced a tender for the renovation of the square at the end of last year, and a company is expected to be selected by the end of February. According to the project, the costs should be around 97 million crowns excluding VAT, and the city will also utilize European subsidies. Completion is scheduled for next year.
