Mělník - Mělník is looking for an investor for the demolition of a building known as the Hold, located in the city center near Karl IV Square. In its place, a new structure could be built according to the city’s criteria. "This is a variant that is being worked on intensively," said the mayor of Mělník, Ctirad Mikeš (My City), at today’s press conference.
The town council is expected to decide on the demolition by the end of April. The city has a plan that after the building is demolished, the site could be temporarily or permanently replaced by open space. According to the mayor, further discussion on the demolition will take place at the town council. There is also a group of people in the city who oppose the demolition of the unfinished building and would like to see its completion. It should serve as a cultural hall, although it would not be financially viable for the city to operate it. Additionally, the completion and modifications would be very costly.
According to Mikeš, it would be ideal for the city if a decent developer were found who could build a structure with shops on the ground floor and several floors of apartments above, as those are lacking in the center. This is also contributing to the depopulation of the city center.
If the council approves the demolition plan, the city will need to prepare a financial plan and handle the bureaucratic necessities. Demolition work is expected to begin next year and may cost over 10 million Czech crowns.
Mělník is preparing a complete transformation of Karl IV Square, having recently presented a study to the public, which residents and experts, including local architects, are commenting on and adding suggestions. Among other things, it is about ensuring that the redesigned square also serves as a place for gathering and relaxation.
