Mělník - The complete renovation of Mělník's Václav Havel Square could be ensured by a developer. The square has a complex of buildings from the socialist era. The city has long planned to demolish them. Another part of the buildings belongs to a private owner, who met with city representatives even before the elections. The city cannot carry out the complete transformation on its own; it is a project worth hundreds of millions of crowns, said Mělník mayor Tomáš Martinec (ODS).
The buildings should be replaced with new ones that would include apartments and commercial spaces. "In this regard, we are maintaining the direction of the previous city leadership," stated the mayor.
The city has been preparing the demolition of the buildings for many years, but the start of work was complicated by the fact that part of the property belonged to Russian owners. This year, it was acquired by a private company. According to the mayor, the new city leadership could also envision cooperation with it. They plan to discuss this in the coming weeks. Depending on the results, the renovation of the square could then be addressed jointly, or the city could independently issue a tender with specific conditions for the developer.
The city had previously commissioned a study for the renovation of the square. It included greenery, the establishment of meeting places, and parking modifications. The construction of never-completed buildings began before 1989. The usability of the buildings would still be complicated even after an expensive reconstruction.
