Mělník - The Mělník city council approved the demolition of the so-called Holdu, an unfinished building in the center, on Monday. However, it is still unclear whether the demolition will be paid for by the investor, who would build a new building on the site, or by the city. It is also unknown when the demolition will start and how much it will cost. Another solution will be presented, said Mayor Ctirad Mikeš (My City) to ČTK. The specific procedure and conditions will still need to be approved by the councilors.
The city leadership has been looking for an investor for several months who would build a new structure with commercial spaces and primarily apartments on the site of the demolished socialist-era building. The project would be developed according to the city’s specifications. The estimated costs for the demolition are around ten million crowns, but refurbishing the current building would be expensive and it would be difficult to adapt the structure to current requirements.
The city had previously planned for a referendum to decide on the demolition. However, the councilors did not support calling for it, among other reasons due to the high costs of the popular vote, which would amount to about half a million.
The building is located at Karl IV Square. In the coming years, the square is expected to undergo a complete transformation, primarily serving as a public space. The city has commissioned a proposal for modifications, which is being supplemented this year with public comments. For example, new parking spaces are to be created, greenery will be added, and traffic will be moved to Nová Street. Overall, the appearance of the area is set to improve significantly.
