Polička - In Polička, in the Svitavy region, modernization of Bohuslav Martinů Square will soon begin; the composer’s childhood room is located in the Church of St. James. The company will take over the construction site on April 1st and will complete the first phase by June. This will be followed by further phases, lasting until the end of the summer of 2026. The project also includes a stream that recalls "Opening of Springs," Martinů's famous cantata, as stated in a press release by the head of the department of urban planning, development, and environment, Marta Mastná.
“It has been a long five years from the idea to the actual realization. The first thought of revitalizing this area emerged during the completion of the complete reconstruction of the neo-Gothic Church of St. James, a national cultural monument. At that time, the question arose as to how to suitably and dignifiedly arrange the square and the entire adjacent area,” said Mastná.
Polička approached architect Přemysl Kokeš, who has already designed revitalizations of other parts of the historic center. His proposal not only includes the transformation of surfaces but also features atypical furnishings in the square, a fountain, underground rainwater tanks, and tree plantings. A total of 26 trees are to be planted in the square and seven more in Riegerova Street.
“From the beginning, it was clear that this would not only be a visual change of surfaces and the addition of greenery. Similar to the previous reconstructions of the square and individual streets, the adjustments also include the complete replacement of engineering networks,” said Mastná. An archaeological survey precedes everything, as the church is a national cultural monument, she added.
The architect is collaborating with Zuzana Ambrožová, and both reference composer Bohuslav Martinů in their design. It will feature a statue of a small boy running home with his violin, into the room in the church tower. Water from the fountain is to flow in a stream all the way to Riegerova Street, reminiscent of "Opening of Springs," the composer’s famous work.
During preparations, according to Mastná, costs have risen sharply. The revitalization will cost 47 million crowns, with the city receiving 19 million crowns in subsidies. In the past, the city had postponed the project due to its high cost. The work will last until the end of August 2026, and pedestrians and motorists must expect restrictions and closures.
