Jihlava – The architectural competition for the new Horácká multifunctional arena in Jihlava was won by the design of Josef Chybík. It includes an arena for 5,600 spectators and accompanying facilities, among which people could walk into the adjacent park. The city wants to build the arena in place of the aging Horácký Ice Stadium. The jury evaluated six proposals, awarding three of them. This was stated to journalists by city councilor David Beke (ODS), who is the project manager for the arena's construction, before the opening of the exhibition of proposals at the stadium.
The home games of the Dukla hockey team are played at the Horácký Ice Stadium. The club and sports facility belong to the city. According to the structural engineer, the stadium with the old roof can operate until at least 2022. "The assumption is that we would like excavators to arrive in the fall of 2021 and begin demolishing this building," said Beke. The construction of the arena, where other sports could be played along with the hockey league and social and cultural events could be held, is expected to take about two years.
The city directly selected three participants for the architectural competition, while the other three were added by the jury from the applicants. The winning design was developed by Josef Chybík with the Chybík+Krištof studio, which includes a green-roofed arena. He received a reward of 1.5 million crowns. The second place went to a puck-shaped hall designed by Projektil Architekti. The third prize was awarded to the proposal by architects Jakub Našinec, Aleš Kubalík, Josef Kocián, and Veronika Sávová, whose arena resembles a white-bordered rink with rounded corners. The city distributed 4.35 million crowns among the participants in the competition.
The costs for the implementation of the competition designs were expected to be around 750 million crowns excluding tax. "Some were more successful than others," said Beke.
"We are going step by step, keeping to the schedule," said Jihlava's mayor Karolína Koubová (Fórum Jihlava) regarding the preparations for the arena's construction. She recalled the long-standing debates about where to build the hall. "We are aware that we face tough battles regarding finances because this is an expensive project," she added.
According to the mayor, the city also awaits the issue of privatizing Dukla. "We want a strong partner to become a stakeholder in the club, one who can help the city take care of the Dukla brand," she stated.
Proposals for the new arena will be exhibited at the Horácký Ice Stadium until the end of October.
