Brno – The Skořepka parking garage in Brno might ultimately look different than what the Brno Communications presented in mid-March. Jan Strmiska, the project director of the municipal company, told ČTK. Proposals that would modify the current project could be ready in about a month. The parking garage could become a multifunctional building with a standard facade. If the building were to serve purely as a parking garage, it would take the form of a skeleton with columns and concrete ceilings, encircled by a stainless steel mesh.

This design has received criticism from Jan Tesárek, the director of the Office of the City Architect of Brno (KAMB), some opposition council members, the transportation councilor Petr Kratochvíl (ODS), and some architects. Therefore, representatives from Brno Communications and KAMB met this week to discuss options for changing the project. "The design has been evolving since 2014, and the old zoning plan did not allow us to construct a multifunctional building. A new zoning plan has been in effect since February 1, and it now allows for this," Strmiska noted.

Construction will not stop now, but the design may still undergo changes. "Emphasis will still be placed on parking, but it is possible to incorporate some commercial space on the ground floor, and perhaps even housing above. The external appearance would certainly be different. The floor plan will, of course, remain the same," said Strmiska. The municipal company will present the proposals to the city leadership, which would need to approve the changes. It is likely that the multifunctional building would be more expensive. The original costs were estimated at 120 million crowns.

The building is situated in an open space between Křenová and Vlhká streets and Skořepka. It is located just a few dozen meters from the historic center and next to the only synagogue in Brno. The reaction to the original design of the skeleton surrounded by a mesh was overwhelmingly negative. Tesárek commented that it represents "a complete resignation on architecture."
