Pardubice - The representatives of Pardubice will make a final decision in September on whether to purchase the Automatic Mills, designed by the prominent architect Josef Gočár. The Deputy Mayor informed journalists about this today. The owner is offering the heritage-protected premises for tens of millions of crowns, but the exact price has not yet been specified.
"The decision will be clearly up to the representatives. We will prepare materials for the meeting on September 18 that will outline the city's further steps," Brendl stated.
The representatives have several options. They can accept the offer and buy the mills. The city hall may also choose to regulate what will be developed on the site in the future, without becoming its owner. A third option is that the city will not address regulation at all and leave all construction activities to the future investor, which is unlikely.
The Deputy Mayor, Michal Koláček, previously stated that the city will not be purchasing the mills for now. "I don't want to say that we rule it out, but this topic is not on the table right now," he remarked.
All parties (the city, the owner, experts) agree on one thing. It is a significant landmark of the city, and no one is indifferent to what will eventually happen to it. The mills officially ceased production at the turn of March and April, and the company GoodMills is currently looking for a buyer. Reportedly, some have reached out, but they did not have serious offers. One of the proposals involved building a supermarket, which would not be possible given the cultural value of the site.
"I immediately rejected all offers. The company GoodMills cares about what happens to the mills. They are the most significant structures in the former Austria-Hungary," said Pavel Skřivan, an external collaborator for the company.
Gočár was inspired by Anglo-Saxon architecture in his design of the mills. They were built between 1910 and 1925. The structures are characterized by exposed masonry made of dark and light bricks.
"The mills are a unique architectural gem that transcends the regional context and speaks in a European context," stated architect Ondřej Teplý, who is collaborating with the city on a feasibility study for the site.
