Pardubice - The leadership of Pardubice has abandoned the idea of purchasing the listed Automatic Mills from GoodMills. The buildings, designed by architect Josef Gočár, have been abandoned since the spring of the year before last. Negotiations have been dragging on for about two years; the owner did not reach out to other interested parties for a long time, but recently contacted an external company to find another investor by November 30. The repairs of the complex are beyond the city's capabilities, so the city hall will try to cooperate with the new owner, as indicated in the informational report for today’s city council meeting. "In the event that the new owner of the complex prefers commercial use of the area, excluding the national cultural monument, it is possible to find agreement with this owner regarding grant-supported use for the national cultural monument," the report states. A working group was formed two years ago for the potential use of the mills and created a proposal for a so-called Kulturfabrik, a cultural and educational center. However, the councilors did not praise the project last September, nor did they decide on purchasing the mills for 25 million crowns. Due to low attendance, the voting was invalid. Pardubice had hoped to receive a European grant for the revitalization of the national cultural monument. It could reach up to five million euros (approximately 136 million crowns), but the condition is that it must be filled with cultural activities by 80 percent. The costs for reconstruction and equipment could be estimated at up to 400 million crowns. The opposition is disappointed with the city's approach. "The city should have at least registered a study that would determine what will be there. Now the investor can do anything, like building warehouses," said Milan Košař (Pardubáci) to journalists before the city council meeting. He also pointed out that the city hall is considering purchasing a building from ČSOB Insurance for 300 million crowns, which is considered very unsuccessful, but does not have money for the listed mills. "It's a lamentable situation that we should not have reached," stated František Brendl (Pardubáci). Councilor Štěpánka Fraňková (Pardubice Association) is concerned whether the city leadership will have an alternative project from which it could draw grants.
