In the vicinity of the Brno city hall, an eight-story parking garage will be built

Brno - Next to the Brno New Town Hall, an eight-story parking garage with 400 spaces is expected to be constructed within approximately one year. The company Parking Brno is set to begin construction this year. The Czech News Agency learned this from a plan that the investor submitted to authorities for environmental impact assessment. A chapel will be built on the roof, which originally stood at the nearby Dominican Square.
    The parking garage will be built next to the historical complex of the Land Assembly on Panenská Street, where the municipality is located. The area is currently used partially as a park with a parking lot. The new building will also include a café on the ground floor and gallery spaces on the upper floors. A chapel will be constructed on the roof of the building, and the investor plans to use historical stone elements from the so-called royal chapel, which was demolished in 1908 at the nearby Dominican Square. Its remains are now stored in a repository.
    The costs for the parking garage will amount to approximately 170 million crowns, according to available information. Construction could begin as early as July, with the investor planning for completion in May 2010.
    In addition to the parking garage on Panenská Street, further public garages are planned to be built in Brno, specifically underground at the Janáček Theatre. In this case as well, the city is likely to seek an investor through a competition. The public garages are intended to relieve the center of Brno from cars. There is also a significant shortage of parking spaces in the city center, with drivers needing approximately 4500 more.
