Brno - The above-ground construction of the Janáček Cultural Center in the Besední and Veselá street area in Brno could begin after the completion of work on the underground garages as early as the end of 2016. This was stated today by the chairman of the city’s cultural committee, Stanislav Michalík, at the first meeting of the Brno Cultural Parliament. Until then, the project documentation for the hall, which is missing in the city, will be developed. Meanwhile, the city hall can also seek funding for the construction. Currently, it does not have the funds, and approximately half a billion crowns is needed. The meeting of the cultural parliament was established by the mayor's deputy responsible for culture, Matěj Hollan (ŽTB), to facilitate discussion with representatives of various cultural organizations. The idea of creating the Janáček Cultural Center in Brno has been around for a long time. However, no one has yet moved forward with the construction due to the lack of funds. "The center has two phases, one is underground and the other above ground. The underground phase will have garages, and above it, there will be a cultural hall," Michalík informed. The entire area designated for the center will be closed off starting in July for an archaeological survey, which will last approximately half a year. "Once this period is over, we will start digging the construction pit for the foundations and garages. If all goes well, the work on the garages could be completed by the end of 2016. We will strive to ensure that the construction of the hall follows immediately after the garages," stated Michalík. According to him, this is the optimistic scenario; if there are delays, the completion of the garages could be pushed to the beginning of 2017. It is still unclear where the city will get the money for the Janáček Cultural Center. "We are in agreement with the region, but we are also looking for additional options," said Hollan. Brno wants to obtain funding primarily from the state. According to the deputy, the center will not only host the Brno Philharmonic but will also be a cultural venue for various events and activities. Hollan himself has undertaken several trips to cities in Europe to draw inspiration from their concert halls. He visited Hungary, Poland, Denmark, Britain, Germany, and Finland. "For example, we evaluated the hall in Katowice, Poland, as absolutely top-notch. The hall in Lahti, Finland, is similarly great," added Michalík. During the construction of the underground garages, the project documentation for the hall will be created, which will give insight into its design and more precise costs.
