Brno - A new parking garage, the fifth in order, will be fully operational in the center of Brno starting Tuesday. The city company Brněnské komunikace built it on Panenská Street for a quarter of a billion crowns. The garage has a capacity of 361 cars and ten motorcycles, representatives of Brněnské komunikace informed reporters today.
The first half hour of parking will cost 15 crowns in the new garage, while an hour will cost 30 crowns. On Saturday afternoons, Sundays, and between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM, an hour will cost 20 crowns. Prices are comparable to the competition. For example, under the Janáček Theatre, people park during peak hours for the same hourly rates, but for twenty crowns, they can park starting from 6 PM.
The new parking garage consists of two underground and eight above-ground floors. "A total of 20 spaces are designated for vehicles powered by CNG and LPG on the roof of the garage. A new feature among parking garages in Brno is the light navigation system for available parking spots. Green indicates free spots, while red indicates occupied ones," stated Luděk Borový, the general director of Brněnské komunikace.
The entrance and exit of the parking garage are located on Husova Street, in close proximity to the International Hotel and the Moravian Gallery building. "The entire structure is integrated into a historic and very prominent area of the city center, so demanding requirements were placed on its design, quality, and execution, which were carefully monitored," said Richard Mrázek, chairman of the board of Brněnské komunikace.
The city continues to build underground garages with 191 spots for the future Janáček Cultural Center on Veselá Street. These garages are expected to be completed by the end of next year. However, there are currently no plans to limit parking on the streets of the historic center in connection with the new parking options. Changes and possible surface parking restrictions will be considered only with the introduction of residential parking, which is planned for next year in the historic center.
The historic center of Brno has gradually been surrounded by parking garages. Another one operates under the Janáček Theatre, in Kopečná, in the Špalíček shopping center, and also at the corner of Kounicova. However, this garage has not been filled to the extent that it provides sufficient profit to the private investor, which is why it is now completing the conversion of part of the garage into offices. The city previously announced that it would limit parking options on the streets in connection with the construction of parking garages.
According to Luděk Borový, the director of Brněnské komunikace, a parking garage near the train station is still planned. There are currently two options - one with 500 spaces and another with 2000. "The locations have not yet been fully resolved in terms of ownership, but I believe that the project will be initiated for realization within two years at the latest," Borový stated.
