Pardubice - The Tyršovy Sady in the center of Pardubice should begin renovations within two weeks. The revitalization, costing 83 million crowns, will commence with excavation and demolition work. This was announced at a press conference by Deputy Mayor František Brendl (Pardubáci), who is responsible for the project. "We will now submit a request for project co-financing with funds from the European Union, and simultaneously, work in Tyršovy Sady can begin, it should be within the next two weeks," said Brendl, who defended the project before the council members on Tuesday. Included in the presented materials was the opinion of the Regional Council Office of Northeast Bohemia confirming the high likelihood of obtaining a grant from the European Union. The park in the city center is set to undergo significant changes, including the addition of a promenade and a restaurant. The renovations aim to create a relaxation area in Tyršovy Sady, with new lighting and park furniture being installed. The lawns will serve both athletes and people who wish to sit on the grass or have a picnic. The entrances to the park will also undergo changes. A new access to Tyršovy Sady will be built from Labská Street. The staircase leading into the park from Sukova Street will also be renovated. Modifications are also planned for the entrance from Republic Square. According to the project, all these locations will have barrier-free access to the park. The project has many opponents; for instance, in mid-May, two hundred people protested in front of the Pardubice town hall due to the high cost of the project. Benches have become a symbol of the protests; one is estimated to cost nearly 69,000 crowns. Prior to this, people protested against the felling of trees, and at Tuesday’s council meeting, opponents presented the city leadership with a petition against the revitalization with 7,753 signatures. The city wants to use European grants for the construction, which are time-limited. To meet the conditions for the allocation of funds, the city must use three-quarters of the grant by mid-2013, which means construction must start as soon as possible. The renovation of Tyršovy Sady has been stirring emotions for some time. A calendar of actions was also created in protest against the tree felling.
