The country will decide today on the principles of land development and road 43

Brno - Regional councilors are expected to decide today on the update of the land use planning principles of the South Moravian Region. The preparation of road 43 from the D1 motorway through Brno further north depends on this. Only after the issuance of the updated principles will the route of this road be established. The road is to disconnect from the D1 near the Brno district of Bosonohy and head north through Bystrc, along the dam of the Brno Reservoir through the city district of Kníničky and then towards Kuřim and north to Černá Hora and the Boskovická Valley up to Moravská Třebová. There, it is to connect to the yet non-existent D35 motorway.

For example, the association Citizens for D43, as a bypass for the entire city of Brno, and the Guardians of the Brno Reservoir and its surroundings have called for the rejection of the update. "We call for the protection of the homes of thousands of people from the intrusion of heavy truck traffic into their immediate vicinity," states the associations' declaration.

People protested against the construction of the road through Brno last Sunday at the Brno Reservoir. However, the first protest bike ride took place as early as 1996.

In 2010, the Brno Regional Court annulled part of the Brno land use plan that included the route of the R43 expressway through Bystrc. The ruling was confirmed by the Constitutional Court in September 2010. A key ruling was made in June 2012 when the Supreme Administrative Court annulled the Land Use Development Principles of the South Moravian Region. The lawsuit was filed at that time by a group of 14 municipalities and 13 people from the Brno and Blanenská regions.

The South Moravian Region resumed discussions with municipalities and the public about the R43 route in 2014. Three years later, it selected a contractor for a spatial study, based on which the regional land use development principles were updated. The result at the end of 2018 was a proposal that the road would run through Brno in the Bystrc variant. The variant leading through the Boskovická Valley west of Brno, which was a bypass of the city, was sidelined and is still promoted by some associations.

This February, the region added a requirement to the decision-making part that the road be in a tunnel or tube for its entire length through Bystrc.
