Brno - The study on which the principles of spatial development of the South Moravian Region are to be updated will be presented by the regional leadership to the affected municipalities and other interested parties on December 10. Its results will indicate the routes that some major roads, particularly highways, should follow in the future. The possibility to register for the presentation has been announced by the region on its website.

The current regional leadership initiated the study shortly after the elections in 2016. The previous leadership under Governor Michal Hašek (ČSSD) decided to only reserve land for certain routes, postponing the definition of routes for later. It is still not clear how the future four-lane road 43 from Brno to the north will be routed, nor is it certain whether the so-called southwestern tangent will be created. This would connect the D1 highway with the D52 highway and encircle Ostopovice with the highway from all sides. The study also addresses the major southern bypass of Brno and the expansion and connection of the D1 highway to lower-class roads and surrounding municipalities from Černovická terrace to Holubice. The study is expected to recommend three to four variants, which will be discussed in the update of the principles of spatial development.

According to the original assumptions, the update was to be completed by the autumn regional elections in 2020. However, the completion of the study was expected at the turn of this summer and autumn. It remains a very controversial topic due to road 43 and the southwestern tangent. There are numerous opponents to each variant, so a smooth process of the update should not be expected. Furthermore, the current principles of spatial development and their validity will be discussed by the Supreme Administrative Court. Petitioners were unsuccessful at the regional court, so they turned to a higher instance.

Only after the completion of the planning document update will it be possible to begin preparing road 43, which is to lead from the D1 highway in the southwest of Brno to the north around Kuřim to Černá Hora and then further to Moravská Třebová, where it should connect to the non-existent D35 highway. The current road I/43 is overloaded, especially between Brno and the turnoff to Boskovice.
