Brno – The leadership of Brno will address the possibility of demolishing the Za Lužánkami stadium this summer. The developed project documentation indicates that it will be estimated at 190 million crowns. The city expects that the price may decrease based on the tender process. This was stated by the spokesperson of the Brno magistrate, Filip Poňuchálek. Talks about the demolition have been ongoing since the beginning of last year. The necessity to demolish the dilapidated football complex subsequently emerged from a survey conducted by experts from the Faculty of Civil Engineering at VUT in Brno.
The magistrate has updated the project documentation. The city leadership will now discuss whether to demolish the stadium all at once or in parts. "We must also determine how the area should look after the demolition, which we are discussing. Furthermore, it is necessary to ensure that there is no risk of landslides after the demolition," said Deputy Mayor of Brno René Černý (ANO). The project documentation has resulted in an estimated cost of the works, with the final amount expected to be clear only after selecting the contractor. If the project is changed, the cost could decrease.
The survey by the experts from VUT revealed overall material degradation of reinforced concrete structures and substantial details with critical areas showing massive irreversible damage. The demolition will primarily concern the dangerous structures of the western stand. "At this moment, it can only be estimated that the work could begin by the end of the year, if everything goes smoothly," added Poňuchálek.
The Za Lužánkami stadium still holds the attendance record for the highest football league. In October 1996, 44,120 spectators attended the match between Brno and Slavia. The last league match was played there in September 2001. Since then, the stadium has been deteriorating. In 2015, it came alive again with the farewell of footballer Švancara, where nearly 35,000 spectators attended the exhibition match.
