Brno - Brno wants to repair the dilapidated football stadium Za Lužánkami in the coming years, which came to life last year during the farewell of footballer Petr Švancara. Until then, it had not been used for many years. The estimated repair costs should not exceed two billion crowns, currently estimated at 1.7 billion, said Richard Mrázek (ANO), the mayor's deputy, to ČTK today. However, costs may also be lower. The city wants to obtain a grant from the European Union as well as from the state. According to Mrázek, the project is expected to create up to 1500 parking spaces around the stadium.
The Brno council today approved that the city will entrust its company Brněnské komunikace with preparatory activities. "It is necessary to prepare documentation for the zoning decision on infrastructure in the Ponava area, secure the purchase of copyright for the documentation for the modernization of the stadium into the city's ownership, and update the documentation for the zoning decision," Mrázek stated. The documentation for the modernization of the stadium was created several years ago, but according to Mrázek, the city did not have sufficient arrangements to own it. Therefore, this must be corrected so that it can continue to work with it.
According to Mrázek, the work on the stadium consists of three phases. The first is the construction of parking areas, the second involves work on the stadium itself with its playing field and facilities, and the third phase includes measures that need to be prepared for a possible nearby hockey arena, which the hockey team Kometa Brno is negotiating. However, the city would not be the investor of the hockey arena.
There should be up to 1500 parking spaces at the stadium. "In the lower part of the stadium, garages should be built, where there will be 750 parking spaces, another 500 parking spaces should be under the nearby hockey arena in the future, and we are still resolving the remaining spaces," Mrázek said. If everything goes well, work on the parking could start in 2018, and on the stadium itself in 2020.
According to the deputy, the city will try to obtain grants for both the parking spaces and the stadium itself. "We want to get up to 250 million from the European Union for parking and up to 150 million for the roof from photovoltaic and thermal panels, which would reduce the stadium's energy demands," informed Mrázek. The city will also try to obtain over half a billion crowns from the state, but will also approach the South Moravian Region to see if it wants to participate in the project.
The stadium, where Zbrojovka Brno won its only football title in the past, has been deteriorating since the beginning of the millennium. The revival of the overgrown area came at the end of last June during the farewell of footballer Švancara, which was attended by about 35,000 people. However, before that, Švancara, along with volunteers, improved the stadium by self-help.
