Brno – Brno plans to build a multifunctional sports facility with year-round operation at Lužánky, which will serve for skating, hockey, and ball sports. The estimated costs are 170 million crowns. The current area is located at the site of the former ice rink and is used for skating, hockey, or mini-football, said Brno councilor for sports Jaroslav Suchý (KDU-ČSL). According to him, however, the conditions are not ideal and the sports facility is not covered.

The council today approved the investment plan for the construction of the sports facility and initiated a competition for the project documentation. The site should serve the public, schools, and sports clubs. Although sports are already taking place there, according to Suchý, it is not ideal. "The uncovered sports facility is often exposed to strong winds, and sunlight causes the ice to melt, shortening the winter season. In summer, the fields and the building with changing rooms heat up excessively," said Suchý.

The city wants to modernize the area. The leadership discussed the project last year and is now looking for a designer who will develop the project documentation over the next 12 months. "We plan that the area will offer, in addition to a modern skating rink during the winter months, a speed skating oval measuring 333.3 meters that meets the requirements of the International Skating Union for hosting junior competitions and a hockey field of 60 by 30 meters," added Suchý. The modifications will take place in two phases. The first phase will create areas for hockey and mini-football, for skating and ball sports. The existing building with facilities will also be expanded. The second phase plans to build a speed skating oval, stands, and roofing.

Brno has also planned a new football stadium near the center at the site of the old dilapidated one. However, the project is being delayed by property rights disputes with businessman Libor Procházka, who has underground garages and a tennis hall on the city's land.
