Velké Meziříčí - Velké Meziříčí in the Žďár area plans to start the reconstruction of the square and adjacent streets next year. Preparations have been stalled for several years due to disputes in the city council. The city now has a building permit and is preparing to select a construction company. This information comes from the data on the city hall website. The town of Přibyslav in the Havlíčkobrod area also wants to renovate its square and has organized an architectural competition. Currently, preparations have stopped because the city council members could not agree on which proposal to proceed with.
"Two paths are open," said Přibyslav Mayor Martin Kamarád (ODS). The architectural competition took place last year. In addition to the winning proposal from this competition, the four-thousand-strong town has an older study. The proposal from the architectural competition has been criticized primarily by entrepreneurs from the square because it involves a reduction in the number of parking spaces. According to a petition, 48 parking spaces should be reduced. The mayor stated that multiple aspects were evaluated for both proposals.
Velké Meziříčí held an architectural competition for the transformation of its center in 2016. Preparations were then halted due to disagreements in selecting one of the two top-rated competition proposals. There was even a local referendum on the matter, but the outcome was not binding for the councilors. Ultimately, the city council selected a proposal in September 2021.
The reconstruction of the city center with 11,400 inhabitants will be carried out gradually over the next two years. It will be divided into six phases. It will also concern technical networks. For example, height barriers on the square will be removed, and the greenery will be updated. The linden trees in the square will remain, and several more trees will be planted there. The paved center of the square will be cooled by water jets in the summer.
Changes will also concern traffic management. The number of parking spaces in the center will remain essentially the same as it is now, stated Mayor Alexandros Kaminaras (Together VM) on the website. The two dozen spaces that will be removed from the center will be replaced in its outskirts.
The cost of the center's renovation will be determined by the contractor selection process. Earlier, the mayor mentioned that the estimated costs of the entire project are around 160 million crowns.
