Olomouc - The space in front of the main train station in Olomouc will belong to construction technology from February next year until June 2010, which will complete the extensive reconstruction of this area. The modifications will not be possible without a tram service disruption, which will last more than two months, said Martin Major, the deputy mayor, to ČTK. The contract for the construction was won by the company Skanska with a bid price of approximately 250 million crowns.

The city began the reconstruction of the area in front of the station in 2001. In the first two phases, underground garages, a pedestrian underpass, and public space with a fountain in front of the Olomouc regional headquarters were created. The third phase included, among other things, the construction of a new tram terminus. The first three phases required approximately 350 million crowns.
According to Major, the last fourth and fifth phases will involve the construction of a new city public transport terminal. The bus stops, which are currently located in several places in front of the station, are to be concentrated in one location. The city hall will further connect the tram lines leading to the station via Kosmonautů and Masarykova streets, creating a new tram loop in the city.
"The competition for the construction contractor was won by Skanska. Its offer was the best in all criteria, including the duration of the tram traffic interruption. In the case of the winning bidder, it was 75 days," said the deputy mayor.
The final phase of the modifications to the space in front of the main train station will be funded with the help of a European grant. The project will receive 100 million crowns from the Regional Operational Program.
