Olomouc - The Olomouc City Hall is preparing further modifications to the area in front of the main train station, which it started renovating six years ago. In the last two phases of the modifications, the city intends to build a new boarding terminal for public transport in front of the railway station and to adjust the layout of the tram tracks. The City Hall will attempt to secure funding for the investment, which should not exceed 250 million crowns, from European funds. This was stated today by Deputy Mayor Martin Major.
    "The last fourth and fifth phases of the modifications plan to build a new connection of the area in front of the station to Kosmonautů, Masaryk, and Jeremenkova streets. The current tram line will be relocated, which will allow for the connection of the tram lines of Kosmonautů and Masaryk streets," Major said. He added that the project also includes the construction of a new terminal for buses and trams.
    According to Mayor Martin Novotný, it is not yet possible to say when the city will begin the investment. The timeline depends, among other things, on whether the city can succeed with its application for European funding. "If it turns out that we are unable to obtain funding for the project, then we will have to ask ourselves whether this investment is a top priority and whether the station area can wait," the mayor stated.
    City leadership may find out whether their application for funding was successful in the second half of next year. If the contribution is received, the City Hall will contribute 40 to 50 million crowns to the total estimated costs of approximately 250 million.
    The City Hall began making modifications to the area in front of the station in 2001. In the first two phases, the city had underground garages, a new underpass to the train platforms, and a public space with a fountain built in front of the Olomouc Region headquarters. The third phase included the construction of a new tram terminus and parking lot near the station. The first three phases of the modifications cost approximately 350 million crowns.
