Olomouc - The Olomouc City Hall wants to complete the modifications of the area in front of the main train station with the help of European funds, a reconstruction that began seven years ago. In the last two phases, which are estimated to cost around 200 million crowns, a new passenger terminal for public transport is expected to be built near the railway station, for example. This was stated by Deputy Mayor Martin Major. He mentioned that the fourth and fifth phases of the modifications also include the connection of tram lines leading to the station from Kosmonautů and Masarykova streets. The tram tracks will be connected in front of the Sigma hotel. "This will create a new tram circuit in the city," Major stated. Regarding the planned passenger terminal for public transport, he said that it will change the positions of the bus stops, which are currently located in several places in front of the station. "They will now be concentrated in one place, in front of the entrance to the station building. The terminal will also include an information system for public transport," the Deputy Mayor added. The City Hall will seek a grant from the Regional Operational Program for the investment, which could cover up to 75 percent of the costs, according to Major's estimates. "If we are successful, we could start the modifications in October or November next year. The construction will take several months," the Deputy Mayor stated. The city began the modifications of the area in front of the station in 2001. In the first two phases, it constructed underground garages, an underpass, and a public space with a fountain in front of the Olomouc Region headquarters. The third phase included, among other things, the construction of a new tram terminus. The first three phases of modifications cost approximately 350 million crowns.
