Prague - The building intended to replace the burned-down Petrov cottage on the ridge of the Krkonoš mountains has obtained a construction permit. The company Snowy Chalet plans to begin construction of the new facility this year and complete it by the end of 2019. The investment costs are estimated by the company at 120 million crowns. The construction permit issued by the municipality in Špindlerův Mlýn became legally valid on September 29. According to the iDnes website, Snowy Chalet has had the agreement of the Krkonoš National Park Administration and the energy company ČEZ since this spring. As a result, necessary adjustments to the engineering networks and transformer station could begin this year at the site of the burned Petrov cottage. Issuance of the construction permit followed a January agreement between Snowy Chalet and heritage protection officials regarding the design of the building. Heritage officials originally required the construction of a replica of the burned structure, which the company rejected as economically unfeasible. The resulting compromise includes two smaller buildings that are intended to reflect the appearance from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The new Petrovka is expected to offer accommodation for approximately 50 people in shared dormitories and private rooms, dining in outdoor and indoor buffets, and wellness facilities with a hot tub, steam bath, and saunas. Its self-service nature lies in the fact that interested parties will first pick up keys at the Špindlerův Mlýn information center and will sleep in sleeping bags with disposable liners at Petrovka without needing staff assistance. The original Petrov cottage stood at an altitude of 1,288 meters. The dilapidated building had been closed to tourists since 2008 and, according to some experts, was at risk of collapsing due to its poor technical condition. In August 2011, the building was damaged by a large fire. According to firefighters, the fire was intentionally set, but police did not identify the perpetrator.
