Hradec Králové - The company Snowy Chalet, which owns the remains of the Petrova hut on the ridges of the Krkonoš Mountains, estimates that the construction of a new building could cost around 100 million crowns. The company wants to start building as soon as it completes all the necessary requirements, said Martin Havlík, the company's director, to ČTK. The dilapidated hut was severely damaged by a large fire in August 2011. Heritage preservationists reiterated this March that they cannot agree with the owner on the design of the new building.
The company published details of the prepared study for the construction of the new building on www.snowychalet.cz. At the same time, it admitted that it currently has only one permit. This is the permit for the foundation slab of the new building, granted last October. "The foundation slab could not be realized due to weather conditions, we will start construction as soon as the snow melts," said Havlík. The foundation slab will also serve to secure the remains of the original Petrova hut.
Last autumn, Snowy Chalet removed further debris from the fire site, and workers covered the stone vaults of the original cellars with a tarpaulin. The windows and part of the ceiling are secured with metal fencing panels. The company plans to create a mountain lodge at the site of the original Petrova hut, offering tourists dining and accommodation. A mountain rescue station could also operate in the area. Preservationists have previously recommended not to proceed with the construction preparations based on the submitted study and demanded the creation of a replica of the original hut.
From the Petrova hut, which consisted of a trio of buildings, only part of the outer walls and the transformer station were saved. Firefighters stated after the fire that the fire was intentionally set, but the police did not identify the perpetrator and shelved the case. The hut, located at an altitude of 1288 meters, has been closed to tourists since 2008. According to some experts, there was a risk that the building could collapse due to poor technical condition. A week before the devastating fire, flames had appeared in the building, but back then, the fire was still managed to be stopped.
