Pardubice - Two variants of the new design of Míru Square in the center of Pardubice were presented this afternoon at a public discussion by Deputy Mayor Jindřich Tauber (ČSSD). The first variant is a complete pedestrian zone, while the second is the preservation of one or two lines of public transport that would stop in the street. Both variants involve an investment of approximately 130 million crowns. The councilors will decide on the project at one of their upcoming meetings. "If there is one or two lines left on Míru Square, the walking distance for residents will remain within three minutes. If the street becomes a pedestrian zone, there will be a small gap approximately in the middle of Míru Square," said Jindřich Tauber. Currently, seven lines run through Míru Square. The proposal comes from the workshop of architect Jaromír Walter and envisions Míru Square becoming a place of "meeting and discovery," featuring a tree-lined avenue, additional benches, and water features. One lane for traffic on Míru Square will remain, regardless of which variant wins. If the street becomes a pedestrian zone, it will serve for deliveries, emergency vehicles, and as a possible route in case of an emergency. Therefore, the trolley will also be preserved. In this case, public transport will travel along Sladkovského Street and Sukova Třída. Extensive repairs should also take place on Sladkovského Street. "If public transport is to run here, the road will be repaired and soundproofed. Parking spaces will be preserved," noted Tauber. Listeners also had the opportunity to express their opinions, with several dozen people attending the presentation at the cultural house Hronovická. Preparations for the planned repair of Míru Square, which cuts through the center of Pardubice, have been ongoing for years. An architectural competition was held in 2002, and in 2006 the council approved moving traffic from the street. In 2010, the council voted on the pedestrian zone again, but no resolution was reached. According to the resolution from 2006, buses and trolleybuses should disappear from the area between the Grand department store and the intersection of Míru Square with Smilova Street. The entire Míru Square measures 480 meters. The city hall wants to publish all information about the planned repairs on a special website. It will accept people's opinions at the internet address trida.miru@mmp.cz, and residents can also send them by mail or leave them directly at the municipal office's registry.
