Brno - In Brno, there are still unused areas or buildings left by the army. The disputed lands are the former Jaselské barracks; people want to create a meeting place in the former barracks near Lerchova Street, while the police want to use part of the former barracks in Židenice. Radka Loukotová from the press center of the city hall told ČTK.
The police want to use part of the barracks in Židenice as the headquarters for their city directorate. Approximately half of the area is owned by the state, managed by the Ministry of Defense. The other half towards Rokytova Street belongs to the city. The police would like to utilize about two-thirds of the buildings from the city portion. According to the police, a greater accessibility of services would be an advantage.
"Some necessary services would be closer to the city," said South Moravian Police Director Leoš Tržil earlier, mentioning the traffic department, which currently resides on Renčova Street in Řečkovice.
The city is negotiating the use of the buildings. "There has been a long-term interest in utilization, for example, from the Czech Police, but the negotiations have not yet reached a stage where they would yield definitive conclusions," Loukotová stated.
The dilapidated military complex is owned by Brno near Lerchova Street. The city acquired it in 2003 through a gratuitous transfer from the state with the condition that it would not be used commercially. However, in 2006, the Brno-střed city council signed lease contracts with Wilson Property, which planned to build a multifunctional facility there. It turned out, however, that the contracts were disadvantageous and invalid, the plan was abandoned, and legal disputes arose. The area is now set to undergo new utilization. In the city's participatory budget, where residents propose how to allocate a specified portion of municipal funds, people succeeded with the idea of building a community and leisure center in the area. In the last edition of the budget, the idea of a multipurpose hall linked to the center's spaces succeeded.
The lands of the former Jaselské barracks are still disputed. In 2007, the Kliminvest company acquired the lands from the city, intending to convert the area into apartments, shops, and offices. However, they did not begin the reconstruction within the contractual term, only demolishing old buildings, leading the city to terminate the contract two years later. Since then, disputes have dragged on. "The Regional Court in Brno is still dealing with the lawsuit regarding the invalidity of the contract termination. Further handling of the land is conditional on the outcome of the court dispute," Loukotová stated. The former Jaselské barracks were the filming location for the series Četnické humoresky. Since the demolition of the buildings, the area has become overgrown with invasive trees and remains unmaintained.
There are also other former military facilities in the city. For example, the former barracks in Černá Pole, which now primarily serve the University of Defense. However, part of it is planned to be used by the National Cyber and Information Security Office (NÚKIB). "The project preparation is progressing according to the schedule. Currently, the preparation of the tender conditions and the securing of technical surveys, which will be used for the assignment of an international architectural competition for the new administrative building of NÚKIB, is underway," said the office spokesman Radek Holý.
