Brno - The barracks in the Slatina municipal district will be acquired by the Brno City Hall through a gratuitous transfer. The government decided on this, and a contract is now being prepared, Jindřiška Verešová from the Ministry of Defense's press department told ČTK. The city plans to build apartments, sports facilities, and part of the area will be used as a zone for small entrepreneurs. The renovation of the ten-hectare area will cost approximately 65 million crowns. The city council is expected to discuss the details next week.

The city hall has been interested in the land located near the Černovická terasa industrial zone, also close to Tuřany Airport and the D1 motorway, for several years. However, the Ministry of Finance has repeatedly rejected the sale for 130 million.
The city has already developed a study for future use, said city hall spokesman Pavel Žára. The area is intended to serve as a transition from Černovická terasa to the Slatina housing estate. The study proposes the construction of rental apartments, a care home, or a retirement home or university dormitories. The municipal office, police, and firefighters could also have their new headquarters there.
Some of the existing buildings can be utilized almost immediately, such as the military sports facilities or the hostel on Řipská street. However, part of the area will need to be modified. Demolition is estimated to cost 60 million according to the city's estimates. Additionally, about a third of the land is contaminated, and its cleanup will cost another five million.
The city hall is now trying to acquire the unused part of the Zetor plant area. It also wants to negotiate about other military areas. According to information from ČTK, it wants to take over the airport in Slatina as well. "We are preparing a list of brownfields and will gradually unravel it, particularly the property relations," the spokesman added, noting that there are over 400 hectares of unused and neglected areas in the city.
